3rd hour: During announcements, please post on today's class blog one question you have from last night's reading. This can be a Level 1 (plot), Level 2 (inference), or Level 3 (bigger picture) question as long as it's a question you would genuinely like answered.
1. Warming up: With a partner, please explore the relationships between Theseus, Hippolyta, Egeus, Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius, and Helena by doing the following:
a. Go over last night's homework together so that you feel comfortable with the characters.
b. Using the graphic organizer given out in class, try to fill in as much about the characters and their relationship based on your memory as you can. Then, open your books to add to or correct what you've written down.
Take at look at the example below if you need a jump start:
2. Digging a little deeper in these relationships by putting them into action:
Living Picture 1: Theseus and Hippolyta (1.1.1-20)
Living Picture 2: Theseus and Egeus (1.1.21-46)
Living Picture 3: Theseus and Hermia (1.1.47-92)
Living Picture 4: Demetrius, Lysander, Theseus, and Egeus (1.1.93-129)
Living Picture 5: Lysander and Hermia (1.1.130-182)
Living Picture 6: Hermia and Helena (1.1.183-212)
ALL GROUP MEMBERS MUST PARTICIPATE EITHER BY READING OR POSING.
3. Returning to your opening questions: Find one question on the blog that you can at least partly answer after today's class. Go ahead and type your response right underneath the question.
4. (If time allows) Exploring the cast of characters and putting you in charge of prop/costume duty.
HW:
1. Finish reading all of Act 1 (the end of scene 1 and all of scene 2) using No Fear Shakespeare. Continue the homework you did for today by listing the new characters you meet and what they want. Be as specific as possible, and include a quotation for each in the original Shakespearean.
2. Make your SAT List 12 flashcards for Wednesday.
why does everyone want Hermia? Like what is so special about her?
ReplyDeleteShe is beautiful
Deletewhy does everyone want Hermia? Like what is so special about her?
ReplyDeleteWhy doesn't Egeus want Hermia to marry someone she loves?
ReplyDeleteEgeus is Hermia's father and he want her to marry someone he thinks is a good man for his daughter to marry. Egeus like Demetrius and by the law there the man has more power than the women.
DeleteHow are the fairies going to affect the characters?
ReplyDeleteThey are going to change who people fall in love with.
DeleteWhy does Egeus want his daughter to marry Demetrius?
ReplyDeleteDemetrius is probably a good man, I assume he has a job or a position that is favorable to Egeus.
DeleteWho is Lysander to everyone?
ReplyDeleteLysander is Helena's friend, and is the one whi is in love with Hermia
DeleteLysander is viewed as the hated one that had made Hermia fall in love with him. He is not liked because Egeus complained to Theseus about Hermia not wanting to marry Demetrius.
DeleteLysander is the man who Hermia is in love with and he is in love with her but her father does not want her to marry him. Lysander and Demetrius are kind of silent enemies because they both want to marry Hermia. Lysander and Helena don't really have much of a relationship.
DeleteI still do not understand why Hermia will be killed if she does not marry Demetrius.
ReplyDeleteAthenian law states that Egeus can have his daughter executed or make her a nun if she doesn't marry who he wishes.
DeleteWhy did Theseus capture an Amazon rather than marrying a normal women?
ReplyDeleteMost likely, the Duke of Athens saw this as a symbol of social status. Hippolyta was a prize to Theseus, and a source of bragging rights. Though there is another possibility, however less likely, which is that Theseus fell in love with Hippolyta.
DeleteWhy can you kill your daughter if she doesn't want to marry who you want in Athens?
ReplyDeleteBecause women did not have very many rights in this time and area of Athens.
DeleteThis is because back in this time setting. Fathers had full control over their daughters, and they could do whatever they pleased with them. This means that the daughter must listen to whatever her father says or face the issues that come out of their decision.
DeleteWhy would Egeus kill his own daughter if she didn't marry who he wanted her to?
ReplyDeleteHe can kill his own daughter because of Greece's law, he is allowed to kill her or make her a nun if she doesn't marry who her father wants her to marry.
DeleteWhy does Theseus want hermia to marry Demetrius and not the person she wants to marry?
ReplyDeleteWhy was it acceptable to have your daughter killed for not marrying the man her father wants her to marry.
ReplyDeleteIt is the Athenian law. The father must chose who he wants his daughter to marry.
DeleteWhy does Egeus say he loves his daughter, but is also prepared to kill her if she doesn't do what he wants her to do?
ReplyDeleteWhy is everyone so involved with Hermia's life, what sets her apart from everyone else, what does sh have that Helena does not?
ReplyDeleteHow will the fairies effect with the love quadrangle?
ReplyDeleteFrom what I've heard about this play before this unit, I believe the fairies will use magic to make the four lovers fall in love with different people.
DeleteWhen love is forced, does that make the two lovers that's love is true, stronger?
ReplyDeleteNo love should be a choice, and thats what makes it special. In Romeo and Juliet they chose each other and were always so happy to see each other, but because their family chose to change their love, they died together. I believe that when love is forced bad things happen and when love is chosen by the couple, there is a happy ending.
DeleteThat was pretty deep Ryan
DeleteWhy are the Roman laws so strict?
ReplyDeleteWhy does Theseus want an amazon instead of a regular woman?
ReplyDeleteHow will the fairies make things difficult for Hermia?
ReplyDeleteHow will their love portray near the end of the book?
ReplyDeletewhat does Hippolyta want?
ReplyDeleteWhy is Hermia so special?
ReplyDeleteShe is the Queen of the Amazon.
DeleteWill Hermia keep her promise to run away with Lysander? Or will the possible consequences make her change her mind?
ReplyDeleteWhere will Hermia stay in hiding if she flees the city
ReplyDeletePerhaps in the sewers, or maybe at an ally's house

ReplyDeleteWhat is the relationship between Hippoltya and Theseus?
ReplyDeleteTheseus is to marry Hipolyta and Hipolyta doesn't want to marry Theseus. She is the queen of the Amazons and they have absolutely no interest in men whatsoever.
DeleteTheseus is to marry Hipolyta and Hipolyta doesn't want to marry Theseus. She is the queen of the Amazons and they have absolutely no interest in men whatsoever.
DeleteIf Egeus loved his daughter like he says, why would he kill her for marrying someone else?
ReplyDeleteI think that back then it was incredibly disrespectful to disobey the word of your father. Also I think that Egeus wants best for his daughter, and he thinks it would be better if she married Demetrius. However she doesn't want that, so her father is offended by that.
DeleteWhat does Hippolyta want?
ReplyDeleteShe wants to be set free not prisoner to Theseus
DeleteHow would our modern society react to being put into this old world society?
ReplyDeleteOur society would not like the restrictions put on women in these says. Personally I would have a great time because of the simplified lifestyle.
DeleteI think we would be taken a back by the way men have a bigger role in deciding their daughter's fate. And also I think many woman would disagree with the authority of some men.
DeleteWhy would Helena want to tell the man she wants where the woman he wants is going?
ReplyDeleteHelena thinks that he will see that she is more helpful than Hermia, and since Hermia runs away with Lysander, Demetrius would come back and see Helena as the next best, then marry her.
DeleteWhat if Hermia ends up loving Demetrius?
ReplyDeleteThat would blow my mind
DeleteWill somebody will find out that Hermia and Lysander are planning on running away?
ReplyDeleteDoes Egeus have a preexisting issue with Lysander? Did something happen between them?
ReplyDeleteWill Hermia choose to marry Theseus or become a nun.
ReplyDeleteNeither, I think she will choose to marry Lysander.
DeleteAlso, marrying Theseus was never an option.
DeleteWhy does Egaus hate Lysander so much, If Lysander has the same things that Demetrius does?
ReplyDeleteWhy do people fall in love with others that are mean and rude to them?
ReplyDeleteWho is Lysander in the story?
ReplyDeleteWhy does everyone want to marry Hermia?
ReplyDeleteWho does Helena like in the story?
ReplyDeleteDemetrius
DeleteDemetrius
DeleteWhat does Egeus have against Lysander?
ReplyDeleteHe is not good enough
DeleteIs Hermia loved for her beauty, her wealth, her personality, or all?
ReplyDeleteSo far her admirers have only mentioned her beauty while talking to/about her, so I think that she is loved for her beauty.
DeleteShe's loved cause she's a rebel and she's unique and listens to "The Pixies"
DeleteAnd we all know that the rebel is the best character in every story ;)
DeleteWhat will Hermia choose to do?
ReplyDeleteDoes Hippolyta love Theseus?
ReplyDeleteWhy does Egeus hate Lysander so much? Why is Hermia so loved?
ReplyDeleteWho is Philostrate?
ReplyDeleteHow do Lysander and Demetrius differ from each other?
ReplyDeleteone of them is named lysander the other is named demetrius.
DeleteHow will love affect relationships between all the characters?
ReplyDeleteLove will cause many problems. It will cause friends to betray one another and maybe cause some death.
DeleteWho does Hermia really love? What does she want?
ReplyDeleteShe loves Lysander
DeleteWhy is it that women and men don't have a choice in who they want to marry?
ReplyDeleteBecause it is just the laws of the society in that time period.
DeleteWhy does Egeus (Hermia's father) dislike Lysander and approve if Demitrius?
ReplyDeleteWhy does Hippolyta come off as eager to marry Theseus, if she comes from the all female Amazon society?
ReplyDeleteMaybe she is just hiding her emotions. She really feels trapped and lost but looks like she is fine.
DeleteHow do you think Egeus will react when he finds out about Hermia and Lysander's plan to run away?
ReplyDeleteI think he will be mortified, and want to hang Hermia, like he would have done if she had not married the man he chose for her to marry.
DeleteWhy does Egeus not like Lysander, but like Demetrius?
ReplyDeleteWhat is Lysander's background story?
ReplyDeleteWhy would Theseus kidnap hippolyta wehn he knows her culture is antimen enforced?
ReplyDeleteTo answer my own question if you beat an amazon in battle then you get to bring her back and make her marry you as a trophy wife.
DeleteHe wants to marry her.
DeleteWhy will Helena rat on Lysander and Hermia's plan to escape?
ReplyDeleteShe wants to rat it out to Demetrius because he wants him to know that Lysander and Hermia are going to be together. She thinks that this will make Demetrius forget about Hermia and then he will like her.
DeleteHelena is envious of Hermia because she loves Demetrius. By telling him about there plans she hopes that the one she loves will look upon her differently.
DeleteShe is probably thinking that if she does this she will gain the trust of Demetrius and he will maybe like her. But i do see why you are thinking this because if she rats them out then Hermia wont be able to leave and then helena will still have Hermia in the way.
DeleteHelena loves Demetrius and thinks that if Hermia is taken care of he will fall in love with her again.
DeleteWhy is Helena wanting to tell Demetrius about Hermia's plan to run away?
ReplyDeleteHelena wants Demetrius to love her and she feels that if she tells Demetrius where they are going then Demetrius will finally love her back.
DeleteHow does Hippolyta feel about having to mary Theseus and losing a battle in war?
ReplyDeleteHippolyta doesn't want to marry Theseus and she feels bad about losing the battle.
DeleteWhat other choices does Hermia rather than death from her father? Why is death the choice he makes?
ReplyDelete1. She can marry Demetrius
Delete2. She can become a nun
Her father may not put her to her death. However in Athens the fathers are the ones that choose who their daughters marry. If they don't approve of who their daughter wants to marry and the daughter goes against her fathers word the fathers are entitled to put their daughters to their death. While it may not make sense to us now it was one of the only solutions they considered.
Why does Egeus not want Lysander to marry his daughter, is it all the pride in saying that he chose Demetrius?
ReplyDeleteDoes Hippolyta really love Theseus, or is she marrying him for another reason?
ReplyDeleteWill Lysander's plan of running away with Hermia work or will it fail?
ReplyDeleteTheir plan will most likely fail and everyone will die, because it is Shakespeare and everyone important always dies.
DeleteWhy are there fairies?
ReplyDeleteThey come in later, they play a significant role on the art of love and confusion of what love really is.
DeleteBecause its Shakespeare...
DeleteGavin I like your response XD
DeleteWill Hermia go against her fathers word and risk being put to her death?
ReplyDeleteYes because she is in Love with Lysander and she wants to be with him. So yes she would risk being put to death.
DeleteWhy do the fathers have full authority over who their daughters marry?
ReplyDeleteIn Ancient Greek Societies the men were superior to women, and the father was the decision maker in the house.
DeleteThey have full authority because that is how everything is in Athens, all of the fathers have authority over their daughters.
DeleteWill Helena end up with Demetrius, like she wants, or will Egeus force Hermia to marry Demetrius and not the one she loves, Lysander? And why would a father be willing to put his daughter to death if she doesn't love the man he wants her to marry, but instead someone else? Does he not love her?
ReplyDeleteWhat was Philostrates role in this scene?
ReplyDeleteHe was organizing the wedding.
DeleteWhy does Egeus prefer Demetrius to Lysander for marrying Hermia?
ReplyDeleteEgeus likes Demetrius better because he is the one that Egeus picked for Hermia to marry. He doesn't like Lysander because Hermia picked him and to me he sounds more of a rebel and is frowned upon in the city of Athens.
DeleteEgeus prefers Demetrius over Lysander because, he feels that Lysander has been "Tricking" her into loving him.
DeleteWhy will Hermia be killed if she doesn't marry Demetrius?
ReplyDeleteBecause that's what his dad wants. He doesn't believe that Lysander is good enough for his daughter. It's the law too.
DeleteBecause it is a Patriarchal society and her father only approves Demetrius. If her father does not get his way he can hang her.
DeleteBecause that is part of the law there and father has to approve of who she marries.
Deletethere's another quote by Shakespeare he says "The course of true love never did run smooth".
ReplyDeleteWhere does he get perception of love? Did something happen to him or where did he get his inspiration?
What makes Hermia more special than anyone else?
ReplyDeleteI would not say Hermia is more special than anyone else but so far she seems to be the main character. But I'm thinking that her father has power of some sort.
DeleteWhy does egeus and lysander hate eachother so much?
ReplyDeleteThey hate each other because Lysander wants to marry Egeus' daughter and Egeus doesn't want him to because he wants Hermia to marry Demetrius
DeleteWhy does Hermia have to be with Demetrius?
ReplyDeleteHermia has to marry Demetrius because her father wants her to.
DeleteHermia has to be with Demetrious because Eugeus said so and if she doesn't then she will be executed.
DeleteWhy is Helena in love with Demetrius?
ReplyDeleteBefore the play, Helena and Demetrius were in love and he would do all kinds of romantic things for her, but then he dumped her, but she is still in love with him.
DeleteHelena is in love with him because before he was after Hermia he was "in love" with Helena. Helena thought that this was true and she never stopped loving him even as he went on to want to marry her best friend.
