September 23, 2013: What's Happening in English 10?

Focus: What larger patterns are you starting to find in The Kite Runner, and why are they important?

1. Warm-up: Brainstorming motifs from The Kite Runner together on the board, then drawing them together to form good discussion questions.  Each of you should post your best one on today's blog and then pick one to reply to.

For example, let's say that one of the motifs on the board is violence, and that another is redemption

You could ask a question like this: Is violence a way of achieving redemption?

Or, you could ask something like this: Can Amir ever find redemption for the violence he allowed to happen to Hassan?

Again, once you've posted your question on the blog, please reply to someone else's question.

2. Returning to the hero's journey: Look over the first page of the Joseph Campbell's hero's journey chart given in class today.  With a partner, fill out as much of the first page as you can for The Kite Runner:
  • Think "outside the box" a little.  For example, there may not be any actual dragon battles in The Kite Runner, but there are battles with monster-like people and ideas.
  • Be as specific as possible, citing quotations or at least page numbers whenever possible.
  • Stay in the middle column (the column on the right will be used later).
  • Don't worry if every single step doesn't apply; you can leave a couple of boxes blank if they don't work.

3. Starting Chapter 14 together, if time allows

HW:
1. Finish reading and annotating Chapters 14, 15, and 16 in The Kite Runner.
2. Leaders and discussers need to be prepared for tomorrow's fishbowl discussion.

    1. I believe that you have to forgive before you can truly love. Once Baba met Soraya, he was able to forgive Amir after he met Sonya because they were so alike. After that Baba accepted and loved Amir because he was the only person that he had.

    2. I do think love is a way of forgiveness because if you love someone you have to have forgiveness like between Amir and Hassan.

    2. I think that it does because you could say that Hassan and Amir love each other like brothers and this creates tension because he starts to betray Hassan and this is where the tension is made.

    3. Yes because the ones who are loved the most, are seperating.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In most cases, hate does create tension because there are two sides to everything and naturally people have different opinions. The hate can exist mutually together or it can escalate into violence or war. An example of this is the conflict between the Pashtuns and the Hazaaras that we see throughout the entire book.

      Delete
    2. I don't think so because most of the tension in this book comes from betrayal.

      Delete
  17. violence is a cause of depression because after the rape which was violent caused amir and hassan to seperate and become less happy. like when amir was just throwing his presents in the corner as if he didnt want them he seemed a little sad that he aloud his best friend to be raped so he can be loved by his father. the rape really made amir depressed by just knowing he could have done something but didnt.

      Delete
    2. Yes, I personally think that jealousy can become betrayal. After awhile jealousy becomes hatred and people start to betray and turn on the people they care about.

      Delete
    3. Yes, I think that jealousy is what sparks betrayal. Once you are jealous, you are not pleased with what you are or have because you feel the need to have something more. When this happens, many people go out of their way to achieve their needs even if it means that you will betray someone important.

    1. In Amir's situation he is having regret as to what he let happen to Hassan. He is regretful that Hassan was put in that situation when all he has ever done is love Amir and stand up for him. When Amir lied to his father and blamed his watch and money being stolen by Hassan and Hassan even after being aware of what Amir had done to him still stood up for Amir, I think Amir was jealous. He was jealous because after all Hassan has done for him he still didn't have the guts to defend him. Although Hassan after being betrayed still did and Amir is jealous of the kind of person Hassan has always been and Amir will never be.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I believe that if you have mixed feelings from love, then yes jealousy and tension will come from that love.

      Delete
    2. In my opinion it does because it is just showing that you care about your loved one and you are protective over them.

      Delete
    3. I think that jealousy and tension do come from love because without love you have no reason to feel those ways.

      Delete
    4. No not really because you can be jealous of some one and not love them but you can be in love with what they have. And same with tension because tension would mean that there is something going on inside the relationship or that something bad is about to happen. This is why Jealously and Tension do not always come from Love.

      Delete
    5. I believe jealousy and tension are apart of love, but they do not directly come from only love. You don't have to love someone to be jealous of something they might have that you don't or get in a fight with somebody you barely know. Jealousy and Tension are just parts to love.

      Delete
    6. I think Jealousy and tension would come from love because love causes attachment and people do not want that attachment to be severed.

    3. I believe that Hassan's love and trust for Amir did lead to betrayal because Amir betrayed him many times. One time in the ally scene, which was probably the worst. The other time when Amir hid the watch and money under his bed became another act of betrayal towards Hassan.
