We're English 10 Nerds and Loving It: January 13, 2014

Focus: Which parts of your life might be worth writing about?

Sharing your weirdest poem ever? Any takers?

1. Telling stories about your object (small groups); writing about your object using 25 prompts

2. Overviewing the purpose and details of the memoir unit

3. Writing your random autobiography: Click HERE for ideas on how to start and examples.

4. Sharing your writing on a voluntary basis

HW:
1. Finish your random autobiography if you did not finish in class.  Pick any 3-5 lines from your random autobiography and publish them on today's blog. They can be consecutive lines or separate lines.

2. Reread the overview of the memoir unit and highlight any parts of your random autobiography and your object writing (in other words, any of the writing you did today in class) that might work for this assignment.  In other words, which moments described in your poem might be developed into a longer writing about a moment of change?

3. Signed class policies due tomorrow at the beginning of class.

  3. Do all things happen for a reason?
When I think about God and all his teachings,
I think of everything horrible that has happened in my life.
Horrible things that have happened to myself,
but mostly things that have happened to people around me.
Why are there shootings, why do people die in horrible ways,
    why do family members die?

  4. He never got his book back. I just held on to it tightly. This is the last memory I have of my older brother.

    I have seen myself
Be so sad and alone that I want to die
    And I have recovered
Then I have gone back to the deepest corners
    of my mind
Just to find what I have feared most.

it’s just 600 miles away from my chest,
and it’s wrapped around his neck.
And only one person will ever have all of it,
because we both know that we will have each others.

Yet I remain dominant and hold onto the life I was given

I have seen people do more with nothing

I have gone through the deaths of loved ones

  55. 1. It was a sunny, Sunday spring day, I was home alone watching some tv. It was 7th grade, and I was good looking, but not as gorgeous as I am today. My dad walked in through the front door, and dug his hand through a bag and pulled out a afro pick, he through it onto my lap, I picked it up admiring this wonderful creation of hair maintenance. There was a black one and a red one. I immediately fell in love. I took the black one and went up stairs, I stood in the bathroom admiring my beauty as my hair got bigger and bigger. All day I would pick my hair, if I was watching TV I would be running the pick up through my hair, if I was working out I’d take a break to check up on how the mane was holding up. That night I slept with my afro pick resting on my night stand.

I remember waking up that morning extra early to work on the fro. I picked it out, got it lookin good and went to school. People admiring my beauty and asking what I did differently. A little self conscious about it, I said I woke up and it was just like it. I didn’t put it in my pocket, like I do everyday today. I put it in my binder and hid it. When I went to math I opened my binder and the cute girl sitting next to me said “What the heck is that!”

I replied with “Oh shoot how’d that get in there!?”

“What did your mom accidentally put it in there?”

“Psht noooooo. It’s mine, my hairs gorgeous for a reason, this just helps it get it to its full potential,”

“Yeah sure” she said with a smirk, but looking back at it now makes me realize that she was being sarcastic, but at the time I was convinced she dug it. So, I kept it in my pocket and took it with me everywhere I went since that day.

    2. I have only seen such a wonderful object in movies, and tv shows. I had never seen another person hold onto one, I would be the first.

    3. It was black like all the other, but the hilt of the pick did not have a fist, symbolising black power and unity. Mine just had a hole.
